Summer is shorter…
July is the quintessential summer month. We’re not wrapping up the school year or yet preparing for the next one. It’s the month that most people go on vacation, take random days off from work, pow wow at the beach, and simply downshift from working so hard all year. And it tends to come and go way too fast. Unless, of course, you have kids.
You know how when you were a kid and summer days felt so long?
Turns out that’s because year after year you’re learning and taking in all the millions of details of summer… Over time, you become so familiar with it that you actually don’t take it in the same way. We start to lump it all into the same routines that we have all year.
Here are some habits to adopt this July so you can truly slow down and enjoy this beautiful, short New England summer.
- First thing in the morning, sit outside for 10 minutes and take in the first light of the day. Or go for a morning walk – even better!
- Eat seasonal fruits and veggies.
- Wear sunblock – you don’t want to miss any days because you’re nursing a sunburn.
- Stay super hydrated! Add cucumber, lemon, and mint to your water to make it fancy.
- Get yourself a beautiful new swimsuit.
- Schedule your beach days and commit to disconnect from the world weekly.
- Stay true to your workouts!
- Get out on the water!
- Watch the sunset as often as possible.
- Wear a satin sleep mask to help you get the best deep sleep even if the sun is up before you’re ready for it.
I admit I struggle with slowing down even during the summer. My summers are typically very busy. However, a lot of that ‘busy’ is on the Azorean Whaleboats, so at least it’s fun and on the water! I highly recommend trying an open row or open sail! It’s a great way to spend a warm July evening!
Find the summer activities that bring you joy and thoroughly indulge in them. Life is short, and the summer is even shorter.
I hope you have a wonderful 4th of July and thoroughly enjoy these dog days.
