We know that showing up for class on a regular basis steadily builds our strength, but do you realize that working to improve your mobility can have an equally positive effect on your body? While we tend to focus on power and form, we should also be giving proper attention to how our bodies move. Injury, lifestyle habits and simply aging can all have a detrimental effect on muscles, soft tissues, and joints. Regular stretching has been proven to release tension, improve blood flow, and increase both flexibility and range of motion. Imagine how great you could feel if your body moved freely, unlimited by perceived muscular tension.
In Yoga, there is a concept of the practical balance between effort (“sthira”) and ease (‘sukha.”) . It recognizes that strength can only be measured properly when there is comfort in the body. How we align our body and engage our muscles greatly affects the effort we bring to our workouts, just as how acknowledging our current range of motion correlates to the ease of the movement. This dynamic interplay is in constant flux, ever influenced by our state of health, our mindset and yes, even the heat index.
I often hear folks say that while they acknowledge the importance of stretching on a regular basis, they often do not know where to start. If this rings true – consider booking a mobility session with me. Together we will discuss your physical history and begin where you are today. Small changes can have long lasting positive effects, where you progress towards reaching a balance of effort and ease as you move through your workouts and your day.
Let’s get started. It’s easier than you think.
XO,
Betsy
