It’s that time of year … As we shed our layers, the trees start to fill in with theirs. It’s when stepping outside calls for a moment to take a deep breath and listen to the chatter of birds. When traffic down at East and West Beach starts to pick up and just about everyone has a smile on their face.
This season gives way to a motivational phenomenon. There are undeniable increases across the board with workouts and intensity. It’s also a high season for drinking water and eating veggies and fruits 😉
While the intention is commendable, it can sometimes be misguided. More is not always more. Here is some advice for maximizing your time and your workouts so you can see the results you want without spending every extra minute at the gym.
As long as your body feels good and you’re not nursing any injury, look for room to increase intensity in your workouts.
Some things to consider:
- Resistance. If you can easily reach :30 with your chosen weights, try increasing the resistance. This will drastically increase the intensity and offer better results in terms of output.
- Speed. If you rather not increase the resistance, add speed… with good form. Never compromise form. Getting in as many reps as possible within an interval is another great way of increasing intensity.
- Power. When doing things like squat jumps or treadmill, add more power – almost as if each rep or step were your last. Just make sure to nail the form.
The way Boutique Fitness workouts are designed lends to a decent recovery after each exercise. This means you can approach each set as if it were your last and you’re leaving it all on the table. The recovery between exercises is not long, but it’s enough because the whole workout is only 30 minutes.
If you’re working out for hours on end, you are probably doing too much. Whether it’s with an injury or burnout, overtraining will eventually backfire. There is a better way.
Spending time outdoors is also a great way to complement the work you do at the studio. Walking, gardening, bike rides, rowing, sailing… Staying active outdoors will do wonderful things for your mental health and help keep your circadian rhythm on point – which will facilitate your overall recovery.
Sunrises and sunsets in particular are incredibly powerful for our well being. This is one reason why the South end gets so busy this time of year. It has the best sunrises on the East and sunsets on the West.
In short:
Work hard for 30 minutes a day (3-6 days a week)
Enjoy outdoor activities as often as possible
Make time for the sun – whether it’s rising or setting
