It’s warm, it’s full of anticipation, and it’s the awareness month for some heavy hitters including Juneteenth and Pride 💚💛❤️✌🏽🏳️🌈
June is also Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month.
While puzzles and sudoku are great for keeping the mind sharp, nothing compares to functional exercise and the great outdoors.
We all know how important it is for our mental health to get fresh air and sunshine. What many may not realize is that by being active outside – be it through gardening, walking, cycling, running, rowing, kayaking, etc.- you’re also helping to keep your brain active, young, and wrinkly.
As we age, our brains start to lose their grooves (quite literally). Challenging your coordination, your ability to process various stimuli from the outdoors, and your physical endurance are all great ways to nourish the grooves in your brain.
If you’re indoor for your workout, doing things like the agility ladder, kettlebell complexes, and multi directional movements like a Half Kneeling Windmill or a Transverse Lunge are all great ways to keep your brain sharp and your body strong.
Agility Ladder
The agility ladder teaches you to stay light on your feet and work patterns out from the brain to the toes. This simple tool offers a tremendous opportunity to stay spry as you age.
Kettlebell Complex
Kettlebell complexes combine acceleration, deceleration, body positioning, power, and strength all in one. These can be very advanced but are certainly not out of reach. It’s a learning process… the sort of process that your brain thrives on 😉
Multi-Directional Movement
Multi-directional movements help you understand the space around you. It teaches you center of gravity, builds confidence, and ignites the connection between your major movers and your stabilizing muscles.
This is where the real power of true personal training comes in. To have someone in your corner who is helping to keep you young! Challenging your movements, not just your weights. Making you think, not just sweat. And celebrating your successes, not focusing on the misses.
It’s amazing what you can learn about yourself when you have someone guiding you. xo
