Fitness doesn’t have to be complicated. We live in an era of constantly evolving exercise trends and while trying out all the hot new things can be fun, it can also be overwhelming. Often, it leads us AWAY from our goals-and what really matters: finding joy in movement.
My advice? Stick to activities you love, incorporate some form of strength training, and don’t overlook the simple but powerful tool of walking.
Why I Love Walking
I love to walk. You have probably seen me at the park with two large doodles in tow and an audio book in my Air Bud. I also have a treadmill at home because, let’s be honest, I can be a princess about the weather. For as long as I can remember, I’ve made walking a daily ritual. I always aim for at least 30 minutes, but life happens- sometimes it’s 10 minutes here and 15 minutes there.
Walking has become a foundational habit in my health toolbox and is crucial for both my physical and mental health.
What’s Not to Love About Walking?
Walking is safe, accessible and affordable. The benefits are endless but here are a few gems:
Quality Time: Walking is a fantastic way to connect with the people you love. Take a stroll with your hubby after dinner or meet a friend for a Saturday morning walk.
Boosts Energy: Feeling blah? A walk can revitalize your energy levels, reduce feelings of stress and lift your mood.
Joint Relief: I know this may sound counterintuitive, but walking can ease arthritic joint pain. The movement lubricates joints and strengthens the surrounding muscles.
Immune Booster: Regular walks enhance immune function- so important during cold and flu season!
Blood Sugar Regulation: A quick 10-minute walk after meals will do the trick!
Enhance Creativity: Got a problem to solve? Taking a walk may spark some creative solutions!
Weight management. As a general rule, more movement is better for maintaining a healthy weight. Plus walking tends to keep hunger in check better than other forms of exercise.
If you haven’t yet made walking part of your healthy lifestyle, now is the perfect time to start. With longer days and warmer temperatures, it’s more pleasurable than ever . Let’s find joy in every step!

Angela
